Reverend Susannah Grubbs Carr is a native
Mississippian and an ordained Elder in the United Methodist
Church. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Millsaps
College. She attended seminary at The Divinity School of Duke
University in Durham, North Carolina where she earned a Master
of Divinity as well as a Master of Theology, the latter focusing
on pastoral theology, pastoral and grief counseling, and African
American Spirituality. Susannah is a pastoral counseling
specialist, a Certified Spiritual Director,
and a member of Spiritual Directors International.
During her time at Duke, Susannah had the
privilege of being a Westbrook Scholar with the Institute on
Care at the End-of-Life, through the Theology and Medicine
Program in the Divinity and Medical Schools, wherein she
completed a Clinical Chaplain Residency at Duke University
Medical Center in clinical pastoral education. Her primary focus
during this time was End-of-Life and palliative care training
through pastoral, spiritual, and grief ministries working with
the terminally ill, the dying, and their families in the
hospital and hospice setting. She also completed clinical
rotations gaining experience and training in areas including
crisis intervention and bereavement care, Emergency Department,
Pediatrics, the Heart and Cancer Centers, and the Birthing
Center.
Susannah has worked on a number of church staffs
including Rehobeth UMC in Terrell, North Carolina; Christ UMC in
Memphis, Tennessee; Galloway Memorial UMC in Jackson
Mississippi, and is currently appointed as associate minister
here at Madison UMC.
Prior to her ministry in the local
church setting, Susannah held the position of Chaplain
Coordinator with Hospice Ministries, Inc. and she continues to
stay connected to the Palliative Care Community through
educating and speaking to church and community groups about
issues of spirituality and grief at the end-of -life and the
importance of the hospice mission and philosophy.
Susannah believes her most important vocation is that of wife
and mother! She is blessed with a wonderful and loving husband,
Todd, and their two precious sons, Noah and Caleb, who keep her
grounded reminding her of God’s great love and promise! Susannah
enjoys reading, walking, movies, and spending time with family
and friends-- including Lily, the Carr family Labrador
retriever.
