Hurricane Ida (August 2021) -- Mississippi Conference UMCOR
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 2, 2021
Greetings Mississippi United Methodists,
I come to you today with a heart of gratitude. Hurricane Ida did not do the tremendous amount of damage that had been predicted here in our state. Our latest reports reflect that for the most part, people are handling their recovery locally. This could change as the days progress. We do have some of our sisters and brothers from Louisiana who evacuated and are staying here in Mississippi, so we will try to help as we can.
I also want to report that we have 5,000 cleaning buckets positioned on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we are going to offer them to disaster response efforts in Louisiana when they may be needed there. Our team of conference and district disaster response coordinators and our early response teams (ERTs) stand ready to assist Louisiana when called upon for assistance and those teams have already reached out to them. We will soon be calling upon our trained ERTs to form teams to go into Louisiana under their direction.
I have often reminded people that Mississippians are consistently listed as some of the most generous people per capita in the United States, and that continues to be the case. I have received text, emails and phone calls from people asking "what we can do," and "what do people need?" The answer is that right now funds are most needed. Your donations can be used to help with hotels, food and additional needs of those evacuees who never thought they would be displaced for as long as recent assessments predict response will take.
How can you help the people who have lost so much? You and your church might want to take up a special offering for disaster response. You can send money to the conference office at the address below:
MS Conference Mission Shares
P.O. Box 1603
Jackson, MS 39215
*You can note in the memo line of your checks that this is for “Hurricane Ida Disaster Response”
You can give directly to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, also known as UMCOR, towards Advance #901670. We have even had people stop by the conference office dropping off checks. You can be confident that whichever way you choose to give, 100 percent of donations go towards disaster response. Any overhead is paid through your mission shares to World Service. This is just another way we Live Out The POWER of We through our United Methodist Connection.
We will continue to provide updates as they become available and do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns.
